Die Digital History & Hermeneutics Doctoral Training Unit (DTU) ist ein vierjähriges interdisziplinäres Forschungs- und Ausbildungsprogramm, das vom Luxemburger Fonds national de la Recherche (FNR) finanziert wird und auf dem Konzept der „digitalen Hermeneutik“ aufbaut. Dies ist definiert als der kritische und selbstreflexive Einsatz digitaler Werkzeuge und Technologien, das Testen analytischer Annahmen und die Erstellung anspruchsvoller wissenschaftlicher Interpretationen. Die DTU bietet eine Ausbildungsumgebung für 13 Doktoranden, darunter Historiker, Philosophen, Informatiker, Geographen, Informations- und Datenwissenschaftler sowie Experten für die Interaktion zwischen Mensch und Computer.

#LuxLife: Reflections on The Recurated Museum

During the summer semester we co-taught a course called The Recurated Museum, which explored the evolving role of museums in digital spaces. After the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic mid-semester and the subsequent explosion of movements like #MuseumAtHome and #CultureChezNous, we directly confronted many of the ideas we featured in class in a way that we could not have previously imagined.

Transatlantic Perspectives on Digital Hermeneutics

On 10-12 October 2019, the international conference ‘Digital Hermeneutics: from Research to Dissemination’ took place at the German Historical Institute (GHI) in Washington DC. The conference aimed to critically reflect on the radical impact of the digital turn on all stages of historical research, including archiving, research, analysis, interpretation and dissemination on a transatlantic level.

The aim of the conference was generate and trace the “Provenance of Knowledge” as a core element in documentation. Provenance and Knowledge set a goal to verify the origins of the information and knowledge about an object which correlates to an idea in order to reconstruct the whole chain of creation, use, interpretation and dissemination of particularly information.

Digitising the analogue

Some time ago it suddenly hit us that it has been a while since we read an academic book or article in a physical format. This for the simple reason that we can retrace digital information much quicker — i.e. annotating a PDF, extracting highlighted text automatically with ZotFile or quickly looking up a specific word in a pdf document. A second realisation was that as PhD students in the field of digital history and hermeneutics these "small" digital aspects of a scholars life are almost never highlighted.

Automata and other interlocutors

The notion of the automaton extends at least as far back as antiquity, but successful implementation of simulated intelligence, and even life itself, continues to elude us. Although there is a tremendous disparity between how we imagine robots to behave and how they actually perform, since the eighteenth century they have become unwitting participants in a dialogue about humanity's self-conception.
