Members of the C²DH team assisted to the international seminar organised in Paris by the Media Commission of the FIAT/IFTA on Monday 20th March 2017 in collaboration with INA and EUscreen. This event was a great opportunity to present and discuss researches on the media coverage of various social movements and protests that occurred around the world in 1968. The heterogeneity of the speakers and their topics offered many insights into the entanglements of media and the 1968 events, whether it from a historical, a film-making or a media studies point of view.

Among the members of the Centre who took part in the conference, Andy O’Dwyer chaired a panel on “Filming 1968” and Richard Legay, PhD candidate, presented a paper on the roles played by commercial radio stations during the events of Mai 68 in Paris. The presentation focused on the multiple layers of analysis through non-verbal elements present in audio documents featuring reporters covering live demonstrations and clashes between police forces and protesters.

With the quality of papers presented during the seminar as well as the constructive discussions that followed, researchers can only be looking forward to upcoming similar events with the 50th anniversary of the events next year.
