The role of Benelux in European security strategy (1950-1960)
1 January 2017 to 14 December 2019

This project examines the impact of the US policy of containment on the European integration process, specifically in the Benelux countries, and the role that US military spending (to support containment) had on European integration from 1948 to 1960. More specifically, the project sheds light on how the large-scale early Cold War American military/financial intervention in Western Europe influenced the early European integration movement, the reactions of the Benelux nations (individually and collectively in Western European Union) to those developments, the role played by the Benelux in the US containment strategy, and the contribution of the Benelux to a European security strategy.
