The Winter Online Lecture Series on Europe will take place in December 2021 in connection with the courses “History of European integration (1919-1993)” and “Economic and social history of Europe after 1945” from the Master in European Contemporary History, and the course “Democratic transitions in Central and Eastern Europe” from the Bachelor in European Cultures, with the aim of giving students on these programmes, as well as the wider academic community at the University of Luxembourg, the opportunity to find out about the history and workings of the European institutions in Luxembourg from new and unconventional angles and to discuss some of the milestones in contemporary European history with people who were involved in or witnessed these events. Each session (in French, with Q&A session in French and English) will be streamed via Webex and will include a presentation by a speaker, followed by a discussion with the audience and the opportunity to ask questions.

Luxembourg in Europe and in the world – a historical overview of the country’s socio-economic development from the 19th to the 21st century
Guest speaker: Dr Franz Clément, Researcher at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER)
Franz Clément graduated in political science from the Université catholique de Louvain and completed a postgraduate degree in sociology of work at Nancy 2 University. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the CNAM (Conservatoire national des arts et métiers) in Paris. He is a researcher in social sciences at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) in Esch-Belval. He has led various studies and authored publications on social dialogue in Luxembourg and the Greater Region and on cross-border workers in this area.

Art in the construction of a European identity – a case study from the Court of Justice of the European Union
Guest speaker: Dr Sara Afonso Ferreira, Art Historian at the CJEU
Sara Afonso Ferreira completed studies in the history of modern and contemporary art at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, where she also obtained a DEA postgraduate degree. She embarked on her doctoral research at NOVA University Lisbon, focusing on the Portuguese avant-garde in the early 20th century. She currently puts her expertise to use by working as a curator and literary editor in her specialist field.

The European Investment Bank (EIB), an unknown player in the European integration process?
Guest speaker: Bruno Rossignol, Head of Programme for Climate and Heritage at the EIB Institute
Bruno Rossignol is a graduate of Sciences Po Paris and also holds a DEA postgraduate degree in Contemporary History from Sciences Po. He started his professional career as a journalist for Agence France Presse (1985-1995), serving as head of business and economics reporting in Washington DC, where he covered the IMF, the World Bank, the Federal Reserve and the US Treasury. Before joining the EIB Institute, he was Deputy Director of the EIB Communications Department (2010-2014). Bruno Rossignol is Head of Programme for Climate and Heritage and Head of Communications at the EIB Institute.

Eastern Europe 30 years after the fall of the Soviet Union: Hopes and disappointments of the democratic transition
Guest speaker: Dr Andrey Grachev
Andrey Grachev is a Russian historian, political analyst and journalist. He was Deputy Director of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1974 to 1987 and an adviser and spokesman for President Mikhail Gorbachev until Gorbachev’s resignation in December 1991. He has been a senior research fellow at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations within the Russian Academy of Sciences, at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), at the University of Oxford and at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He is currently an editorialist for the Novaya Gazeta (Russia) and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the New Policy Forum.
