What happens in the passage from sources to data? How can scholars and institutions meet the challenge of finding meaningful content hidden underneath the mass of digital material? In this seminar, I use the enrichment of the digital heritage collection ChroniclItaly 3.0 [Viola in press] as a concrete example to navigate the complexities of these processes. By describing the gains and losses resulting in the passage from digitised sources to data, I argue that it is only through a critical approach that the digital sector can fulfil the second most important purpose of digitization: to enhance access.
