Beyond Nuremberg: Critical Game Making as Public History Research

22 November 2023

History@Play / Beyond Nuremberg: Critical Game Making as Public History Research
History@Play lecture by Clarissa J. Ceglio, University of Connecticut | Greenhouse Studios.

How can scholarly critiques of games about WWII and Holocaust histories inform game making? And how can making a game about these topics enrich public history research? Such questions are guiding development of Beyond Nuremberg, a VR quest-game to collect, analyze, and contextualize primary sources related to the Nuremberg Trials and Holocaust. The talk will address how the team is using process analysis, formative assessments, and other critical making approaches to engage the practical, theoretical, and ethical questions that arise when using VR to engage with historical complexity, traumatic events, and still-vital human rights issues.
