Book presentation: Geschichte einer atomisierten Diaspora

Book presentation: Geschichte einer atomisierten Diaspora

The First World War led to the collapse of the great multiethnic European empires. In Russia, the monarchy is swept away and replaced by the soviet regime. Until 1923, the country was torn apart by a multi-faceted civil war. Moreover, in response to the national awakening of ethnic minorities encompassed in the former Russian space, young national states (Poland, Baltic States, Georgia ...) are being established on the edges of the former empire of the tsars.

Russians in Luxembourg:

Russians in Luxembourg:

in the center of the book are people, destinies, their ancestors and descendants, our contemporaries, albeit in the context of historical analysis. First, let us touch on a few examples that explain why the subtitle of the book mentions the atomisation of the diaspora, i.e. fragmentation of the Russian community. The second part of the report is devoted to reading several excerpts from the letters of Russians from Luxembourg, in order to give an opportunity not only to look at their photographs, but also to hear their voices.

For a New Hermeneutics of Practice in Digital Public History: Thinkering with memorecord.uni.lu

For a New Hermeneutics of Practice in Digital Public History: Thinkering with memorecord.uni.lu

This thesis is built upon an experimental study of doing digital public history. I aim to study the digital interferences of the digital component on the historiographic operation as a whole. While the fields of digital and public history are advancing fast with abundant work on development and application of new methodologies, tools and approaches, the discipline of history is still lagging behind in terms of theoretical reflection on the new practices emerging from it. Researchers have been exploring

DEMA demonstration: Kinora Viewer Replica

A hands-on demonstration of the Kinora Viewer Replica. This public online event shows the fruits of a recent successful collaboration between the C2DH and the Department of Engineering. Combining historical inquiry with a hands-on and technical approach – involving the latest 3D modelling and desktop manufacturing engineering techniques – a media historian and two engineers joined forces to produce a working replica of a very special object in the history of (early) cinema: the Kinora viewer.

Networked Governance and Multistakeholder Cooperation

At the crossroads of three topics of the workshop (Critical testimonies on the implementation or experiments with new modes of governance; Presentation and analysis of online decision-making tools; Prospective outlook on the governance of knowledge and research infrastructures), this presentation allows us to discuss how to increase multistakeholder cooperation between scientists and other stakeholders in practice and to gather perspectives from different cultural backgrounds into the discussion.

Borderland Child Heterotopias. A Case Study on the Belgian-German Borderlands

This article investigates the capacities of children to participate actively in their lives in the Belgian-German borderlands in the time period between World War I and World War II. The article interprets a body of historical sources that has hitherto been left unexplored – namely, borderland child ego documents – with the help of insights from child studies and border studies. Fading Away... The challenge of sustainability in digital studies

Fading Away... The challenge of sustainability in digital studies

This paper emphasizes the need to think about sustainability as a key element of digital studies and digital hermeneutics. It addresses the inherent tensions between the long-term needs of data preservation and maintenance on the one side, and the short life cycles of the data formats, platforms and infrastructures on the other side. Challenges are not limited to the technical maintenance of software, tools and data, but also apply to the wider institutional contexts, epistemic traditions and social practices in which the doing of research in social sciences and humanities are embedded.
