Minettsmap 1980s

Minettsmap 1980s

In the 1980s, two photographers were exploring the industrial region of Luxembourg by camera. Jos Rinaldi, a mechanical engineer/technician at ARBED, and Fred Bisenius, a social and cultural activist, were documenting the life, work, leisure and landscapes of the Minett. The Minettsmap offers us a glimpse of the past through the lens of their outstanding collection.

Zuhause mit Ketty und Catherine

Based on original sources, this radio play is a recreation of a 1950s women’s radio show which offers us a glimpse into some of the typical issues facing women at the time. Our two presenters, Ketty and Catherine, comment on social and political themes mentioned in letters from female listeners living in the Minett. These themes include the call for pacifism during the Cold War as well as the lack of playgrounds for children in Esch. Our duo also offer some advice on culinary matters and household chores.

How to Design Web Archives Research

How to Design Web Archives Research

The aim of this guide is to provide a starting point for using web archives as a source for social science research. With the migration of many aspects of the so- cial world online, fundamental questions have been raised about how and even when social science research happens in the online sphere (Karpf, 2012). Web archives, or archives of content and communications from the Web through time, crucially provide the means for retrospectively studying dynamic media and online interactions that are often subject to change and deletion.

“Italy, for example, is just incredibly stupid now”. European crisis narrations in relation to Italy’s response to COVID-19

Crisis narratives shape public understanding and, consequently, the response to the crisis itself. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, when in February 2020 Italy was experiencing more cases than any other country, the Italian response to the crisis originated debates over how to best respond to the outbreak.

Using word vector models to trace conceptual change over time and space in historical newspapers, 1840–1914

Using word vector models to trace conceptual change over time and space in historical newspapers, 1840–1914

Linking large digitized newspaper corpora in different languages that have become available in national and state libraries opens up new possibilities for the computational analysis of patterns of information flow across national and linguistic boundaries. The significant contribution this article presents is to demonstrate how word vector models can be used to explore the way concepts have shifted in meaning over time, as they migrated across space, by comparing newspapers from different countries published between 1840 and 1914.

Law, Order and Postwar Purge in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (1944 - 1955): Transitional Justice and Redistribution through the example of Justice, Gendarmerie and Police

The present doctoral thesis examines the strategies and redistributive effects of political purge in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg after World War II. It examines in detail the judicial and administrative purge of justice personnel, magistrates, police officers and gendarmerie corps members, and the development of law and order in the 20th century. This study treats regulated purge measures as phenomena of transitional justice.
