Digital History and Hermeneutics. Between Theory and Practice.

Digital History and Hermeneutics. Between Theory and Practice.

As a result of rapid advancements in computer science during recent decades, there has been an increased use of digital tools, methodologies and sources in the field of digital humanities. While opening up new opportunities for scholarship, many digital methods and tools now used for humanities research have nevertheless been developed by computer or data sciences and thus require a critical understanding of their mode of operation and functionality.

What the D does to history. Das digitale Zeitalter als neues historisches Zeitregime?

The digital interferes in multiple ways in our current day practice of history. This article argues that it not only impacts the way we search, store, analyze, and visualize historical sources and how we tell our stories, but the dynamic, real-time, and connected nature of digital research infrastructures and the Internet has a deep influence on how we think about history. As a new temporal regime, the digital age shapes our memory practices and changes the way we imagine and experience the past. By mobilizing the concept of digital

‘As Efficient as a Factory’: Architectural and Managerial Discourses on Government Office Buildings in Belgium, 1919-39

‘As Efficient as a Factory’: Architectural and Managerial Discourses on Government Office Buildings in Belgium, 1919-39

This article investigates the impact of managerial ideologies on projects for new governmental office buildings in Belgium in the 1920s and 1930s. Following the prewar publication of F. W. Taylor’s ‘scientific management’ theories, the scientisation of office activities was propagated by efficiency experts throughout the western world. In Belgium, as in France, the work of the mining engineer Henri Fayol was particularly influential. According to Fayol, private and public bureaucracies had to follow identical

From #MuseumAtHome to #AtHomeAtTheMuseum: Digital Museums and Dialogical Engagement beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic

From #MuseumAtHome to #AtHomeAtTheMuseum: Digital Museums and Dialogical Engagement beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic

The novel coronavirus spurred a keen interest in digital technologies for museums as both cultural professionals and the public took notice of their uses and limitations throughout the confinement period. In this study, we investigated the use of digital technologies by museums during a period when in-person interaction was not possible. The aim of the study was to better understand the impact of the confinement period on the use of museum technologies in order to identify implications for future museum experience design.

Introduction

Introduction

Europe’s twentieth century was characterised by competing and/or conflicting visions about the organisation of the continent. This general introduction explains why the editors decided to focus on the Cold War period, briefly sets out the broader historical context, and finally clarifies the use of the word ‘asymmetry.’

Men with cameras

Men with cameras

Despite the fact that photography in the Minett had been very popular since the early 1900s, working men with cameras used it to perfect their technique rather than as means of activism or social impact. Towards the 1980s, however, this began to change. Two cases of such transformation are the Fotoclub Diddeleng in the industrial town of Dudelange and the Fotokollektiv Schluechthaus in Esch-sur-Alzette.

Future Pasts: Web Archives and Public History as Challenges for Historians of Education in Times of COVID-19

Future Pasts: Web Archives and Public History as Challenges for Historians of Education in Times of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only sparked a renewed interest in history; it has also focused our attention on how the present can be historically preserved. Therefore, it is safe to predict that the COVID-19 crisis and its documentation will be analyzed by future historians, and it will bring about methodological and technological changes that affect our ways of working as historians of education. This chapter will examine the following: First, it looks at some basic characteristics of web archives and how they challenge our work as historians.

Collecting Middle-Class Memories? The COVID-19 Pandemic, Technology and Crowdsourced Archives

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, many groups initiated crowd-sourced archives that invite members of the public to upload personal material connected to the pandemic. By archiving and publishing how "ordinary" people experienced and perceived the pandemic, these platforms influence how the pandemic is remembered and how historians will write about it. This article presents the example of covidmemory.lu and compares contributions to this platform from Luxembourg with others from German speaking countries.
