This workshop gathering 10 participants focused on finding the root cause for the need and purpose for multistakeholder cooperation between social scientists and civil society.

The Schengen Area is one of the pillars of the European project. But it has been affected by several difficulties: the serious consequences of the global economic and financial crisis (2008-2018), growing concerns over external migratory pressure and the question of enlargement, fears of social dumping and, since March 2020, the COVID-19 crisis. Identifying these obstacles is vital so that pragmatic solutions can be found without jeopardising the founding principle.

The five papers of this special issue were candidates for the first Internet Histories Early Career Researcher Award. They represent the next generation of scholarship and show creative, original approaches to the study of internet history. These papers all help enrich our perspectives and broaden them in many ways, from Brazil to China, from Cyberactivitst to Civil Society at large, from Gender Studies to Platform Studies, from Emails to Interfaces, while demonstrating again that there is no unique path to write “Internet Histories.”

This article seeks to identify the factors that have led researchers to root their historical approach in a national or regional context, rather than a global one. This may seem paradoxical when the Internet is thought to be global, and digital content and cultures at least partially cross-borders. These approaches are determined by reactions to a history of the Internet that has been far too focused on the United States from the outset, by a desire to consider this history in a given context, and by the historical sources.

The development of data networks was based on the technical convergence of two worlds in the 1960s: telecommunications and computing. The ITU was thereby involved early on through the Consultative Committee for International Telephony and Telegraphy (CCITT, now known as ITU- T) in the debates concerning transport protocols that arose from the 1970s. At the CCITT, telecommunications’ representatives decided in favour of virtual circuits, which enjoyed a long lifespan. Nevertheless, this choice diverged from the one made by the Arpanet’s researchers, and later the Internet’s community.

In Episode fünf der Sendereihe "100 Jahre Ostbelgien" befassen sich die Historiker Andreas Fickers und Christoph Brüll mit Sprachpolitik und Identitätsdebatten zwischen 1962 und 1980. „Sag mir, wie du sprichst, und ich sage dir, wer du bist“ – so lautet ein vielzitiertes Bonmot. Ohne Zweifel zählt die Sprachenfrage zu den zentralen Themen der Geschichte unserer Region, durchzieht sie doch gleichermaßen die politischen, sozialen wie kulturellen Dimensionen dessen, was wir als Identität bezeichnen.

Dans le cadre du projet d’éducation citoyenne que l’EDIC développe avec la filière européenne du Lënster Lycée, l’EDIC avait préparé, le 13 mai 2020,une « Journée d’études » accueillie par les classes terminales du lycée. On avait préparé deux ateliers pédagogiques (exposé, QR et débats) consacrés à l’histoire de la construction européenne, autour des thèmes « Le rôle du Luxembourg en Europe après la Seconde Guerre mondiale » et, respectivement « Aux origines de l’Union économique et monétaires : comment l’euro a été fabriqué ? ».

Destiné à un large public de tous horisons, cette publications originale traite de la signification historique de la Déclaration prononcée le 9 mai 1950 par Robert Schuman, de ses échos dans le présent, ainsi que des liens de Robert Schuman avec le Luxembourg et du rôle du Grand-Duché dans la construction européenne. Une section distincte est consacrée à la Maison de Robert Schuman située à Clausen sur laquelle l'Université du Luxembourg veille depuis 2016, le Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH).

Le 9 mai 1950, Robert Schuman (1886-1963), ministre français des Affaires étrangères, propose la création de la Communauté européenne du charbon et de l’acier (CECA), jetant ainsi les bases d’une Europe unie, fondée sur la liberté, la démocratie et le partage. S’en suivent sept décennies durant lesquels le projet européen progresse de 6 à 27 membres et évolue au gré des succès et des crises, en apportant au continent la plus longue période de paix dans son histoire.

L’Union européenne plonge ses racines dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1939-1945), le conflit le plus meurtrier de l’histoire de l’humanité. Alors que l’Europe tente de se reconstruire, des tensions politiques fracturent le continent entre l’Est et l’Ouest et la guerre froide naissante fait resurgir le spectre d’une nouvelle confrontation. Mais comment forger une paix durable entre les adversaires d’hier ? Le problème principal réside dans la relation entre la France et l'Allemagne, ennemies héréditaires, qui se sont fait par trois fois la guerre (1870, 1914 et 1939).
