Review: Newspaper Navigator

Review: Newspaper Navigator

Created for the Library of Congress, Newspaper Navigator re-imagines how we search the rich visual content in historic newspapers. The first phase of the project utilized machine learning techniques to extract visual content from 16.3 million digitized newspaper pages in Chronicling America. 1 This resulted in the Newspaper Navigator dataset, released in May 2020. The dataset and finetuned machine learning model 2 are in the public domain. A paper on the dataset was presented at the 2020 ACM Conference on Information Knowledge & Management (CIKM).

Crimes or subsistence?

Crimes or subsistence?

Along with the mining and industrial activity in the Minett, petty crimes also made their way into this iron and steel region. This video reunites nine crime stories about prostitution, food theft and smuggling from newspaper snippets dating from the First World War to the interwar years with linocuts made by Viennese artist Benjamin Steiner exclusively for this exhibition. This work is considerably inspired by the socialist artist and former miner Albert Kaiser (1892-1972).

Minettsmap 1980s

Minettsmap 1980s

In the 1980s, two photographers were exploring the industrial region of Luxembourg by camera. Jos Rinaldi, a mechanical engineer/technician at ARBED, and Fred Bisenius, a social and cultural activist, were documenting the life, work, leisure and landscapes of the Minett. The Minettsmap offers us a glimpse of the past through the lens of their outstanding collection.

Zuhause mit Ketty und Catherine

Zuhause mit Ketty und Catherine

Based on original sources, this radio play is a recreation of a 1950s women’s radio show which offers us a glimpse into some of the typical issues facing women at the time. Our two presenters, Ketty and Catherine, comment on social and political themes mentioned in letters from female listeners living in the Minett. These themes include the call for pacifism during the Cold War as well as the lack of playgrounds for children in Esch. Our duo also offer some advice on culinary matters and household chores.

The Minett as Palimpsest

The Minett as Palimpsest

The landscape in some parts of the Minett can be considered as a kind of palimpsest. For historians and archaeologists, a palimpsest is a writing medium, for example a parchment or a manuscript, that is used several times by erasing the previous writing. The landscape of the Minett has also changed greatly over the centuries as a result of human intervention. The soil can tell many overlapping and entangled stories. Some things have been completely erased, while other traces of past times have been left.
