The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was de facto annexed and incorporated into the German Reich during the Second World War. The laws and ordinances of the Reich applied to the local population, and male residents were drafted into the Wehrmacht and thus subject to military jurisdiction. The main reason for Luxembourgers to be tried by the Wehrmacht courts was for disobeying orders, mostly desertion. Wehrmacht court records contain not only individual and personal information about the motives of the convicts and the findings of the court but also details about their families and backgrounds.

The Impact and Legacy of War Experiences in Luxembourg” researches the personal side of the history of Luxembourgish youth born between 1920 and 1927 who were enrolled into German services under the Nazi occupation of Luxembourg during World War II. The research focuses on personal testimonies and their individual war experience to uncover these men, women, and families’ individual experiences.

This paper discusses the politics of Jewish Studies by focusing on the digitisation of Jewish cultural heritage and its effects for research into Jewish history(ies). In the past few years we have witnessed the emergence of what could be termed the critical turn in digital humanities with an increasing focus on how digital resources shape various parts of the research process and its outcomes. One aspect of that turn is more attention to digital source criticism and the politics of digitisation of cultural heritage.

Seit einigen Jahren hat die ostbelgische Regionalgeschichtsschreibung versucht, den von Philipp Ther geprägten Begriff des ‚Zwischenraums‘ für die Historiografie über diese belgisch-deutsche Grenzregion im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert fruchtbar zu machen. Diese konzeptionellen Überlegungen fanden ihren Niederschlag zunächst in der Buchreihe „Grenzerfahrungen. Eine Geschichte der Deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft Belgiens“ und dann vor allem in der am C²DH entwickelten virtuellen Ausstellung www.zeitschichten.be (2020).

The colloquium is organised by scientists from the Center for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), Professor Marten Düring and Research Scientist Inna Ganschow-Levandovitch, as well as Research Facilitator Marina Laurent from the Faculty of Humanities, Social and Pedagogical Sciences (FHSE) of the University of Luxembourg. The honorary leader of the inaugural colloquium is invited professor of C²DH Volodymyr Nemchenko.

« L’intelligence et le sens moral d’un enfant de 8 ans », c’est par ces mots qu’en août 1933, le médecin-chef de l’Etablissement de Défense Sociale de Tournai qualifie l’état psychique de Maxence C., un débile mental (sic) reconnu coupable du chef de vol et d’escroquerie mais jugé incapable du contrôle de ses actions. A l’aube de ses 27 ans, ce « demi-fou » enchaîne depuis vingt ans les séjours en institution. Entre internats médico-pédagogiques, asiles d’aliénés et établissements de défense sociale, le parcours de vie de Maxence C.

Die "sorties de guerre" 1918 und 1945 haben die heutige Großregion - wie viele andere europäische Grenzregionen - stark geprägt. Offensichtlichster Ausdruck waren diverse Verschiebungen von staatlichen Grenzen mit ihren politischen, kulturellen, sozialen und ökonomischen Folgen. Die Beziehungen zwischen Staaten, aber auch zwischen Bewohnern mussten neu konfiguriert werden. In der historischen Analyse treten neben diesen Brüchen jedoch auch Kontinuitäten auf.

With "Framing Luxembourg:" Statec and the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History tell "a history of Luxembourg in statistics as well as a history of statistics in Luxembourg".

Participation at two roundtables : Could we structure a big story around the materialities of data, computation and networks? Roundtable discussion featuring Cyrus Mody (Maastricht University), Moritz Feichtinger (Universität Bern), Axel Volmar (Siegen University) & Valérie Schafer (C2DH, University of Luxembourg, moderator) / Can we integrate issues of gender, justice and embodiment into the story of the computer itself or must these narratives remain separate and particular?
