The history of the French-Luxembourgish border has been marked by the rapid growth of the iron and steel industry and the massive influx of immigrants coming to work in this cross-border industrial region. Employing a microhistorical lens and a relational approach, this doctoral research explores how border regimes were transgressed by everyday smuggling or subverted by Italian communist networks in the interwar years.

Semantically enriched historical newspapers offer a multitude of opportunities for data-driven exploration and analysis. In this paper we introduce the impresso interface which integrates several types of semantic enrichments and data visualization and thereby supports new exploratory workflows and the critical assessment of large-scale digitized source collections. The interface targets historians and integrates search, filtering, comparison, and recommendation based on automatically detected topics, linked named entities, text reuse, n-grams, image similarity, language, and OCR quality.

This poster delves into the intricate interplay between global expectations for research in contemporary history, the evolving landscape of digital curation, the imperative for efficient research data management, the creation of a well-structured and effective plan for digital infrastructure by emphasizing the significance of developing a comprehensive framework for the analysis and interpretation of contemporary history.

Originally from Vienna, Austria, the Thuna family escaped to Luxembourg following the Anschluss of Austria to the German Reich in 1938. During their two-year stay in Luxembourg, they were supported by the Jewish ESRA Committee and resided in the Hotel Select. Despite efforts to obtain entry visas for countries in South America, they remained in Luxembourg until the invasion of German troops in May 1940, from where they embarked on a disrupted transport to Lisbon in November 1940, which eventually took them to France. In 1942, Hans Thuna was deported to Auschwitz via Drancy.

The Bridge Forum Dialogue and The Robert Triffin Lecture 2024, titled "The evolution of Europe’s financial response to challenges: what should come next?" was organised by The Bridge Forum Dialogue and the Europe Direct at the University of Luxembourg (ED-UNILU) together with their partners – the University of Luxembourg (Uni.lu), Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), the European Parliament (EP) and the Robert Triffin International Foundation (RTI).

This presentation has explored the historical origins and the complexity of building a security policy at European Union level, as well as the major challenges in this area raised by the enlargement of the European Union to Central and Eastern Europe and the prospect of future enlargements to an even wider region (Moldova, Ukraine, the Western Balkans, etc.).

n this chapter, we look at the commemorations of the end of the Second World War in France (May 8 ) and Italy (April 25) in 2020 when both countries were under strict lockdown. We try to understand what the pandemic has done to the online echoes of these commemorations.

Die Peripherie im Zentrum vergleicht die Erfahrungen des Schulwesens in Oberschlesien in Polen und in Eupen, Sankt Vith und Malmedy in Belgien - Grenzregionen, die nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg vom Deutschen Reich abgetrennt wurden.

The presentation of Dr Jean-Jacques Rommes and the subsequently debate with the students was focused on one of the key areas of reflection and research at the Institut Grand-Ducal de Luxembourg. It has examined the characteristics of the historical development of the Luxembourg economy in a regional, European and international context and consider the main challenges and issues facing it in terms of openness to foreign markets, diversification, transformation and competitiveness, while also looking ahead to the future.
