The Laboratory of Psychical Research

Sound Installation at Senate House, University of London

A reimagining of The National Laboratory of Psychical Research established in 1926 by Harry Price, psychic investigator. Visitors explored laboratory equipment and toy instruments that were used to detect activity of unseen psychic forces. Using a bespoke smartphone app and headphones, visitors listened to historical recordings of spiritualist séances overlaid with newly-created soundscapes inspired by the history of psychical research. The Laboratory of Psychical Research sound installation was created by Aleksander Kolkowski, kitt price, and Laurence Cliffe. It was produced especially for the Media of Mediumship research project as part of the Being Human Festival of the Humanities, 2021, hosted in partnership with Senate House Library, University of London. A short video presentation of the installation is currently streaming on the Media of Mediumship  YouTube channel.

Mental Radio:  Radiophonic Montage

Aleksander Kolkowski and kitt price recreate the experience of ’thinking-in’, when thousands of listeners engaged in radio telepathy experiments during the 1920s and '30s. British and American parapsychologists insisted that broadcasting was simply a means to access minds in the mass, but European investigators claimed they had captured the sound of ‘brain waves’ using radio equipment. 'Mental Radio' reanimates the archived protocols of mass telepathy, mixing the signals received by listeners with the soundscapes of the early twentieth century’s radiating brain. Commissioned as part of The Media of Mediumship, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. MENTAL RADIO was first broadcast by Resonance FM on 31 October 2021, 7–8 pm.  It is currently streaming on the Media of Mediumship  YouTube channel.
