Research success stories

After five years of hard work, the C²DH is enjoying growing success and recognition at both national and international level. In Luxembourg, the centre received two FNR Awards in 2021, and with the support of its peers it has continued to develop its network of partners and funding bodies at European and transatlantic level. The “Research Success Stories” showcase the research and outreach projects that particularly stood out in 2021, reflecting the centre’s innovative approach to history and exploration of new avenues of research.

C²DH honoured at the 2021 FNR Awards

On 21 October, the National Research Fund (FNR) held its annual Awards Ceremony, a celebration of science and research in Luxembourg that recognises the outstanding efforts of researchers and science communicators.

The award of Outstanding Mentor, a new category introduced in 2021, went to Prof. Dr Andreas Fickers, Director of the C²DH.

The winner in the Outstanding Promotion of Science to the Public category was the REMIX team for the interactive multimedia installation “Historical Voices from the Minett, which was on display from 26 September to 23 October 2020 as part of the temporary history lab in the Annexe22 pavilion on the Place du Brill in Esch. The lab and the video installation were part of the research project “Remixing Industrial Pasts in the Digital Age”, funded by the Esch2022 European Capital of Culture association.

Remixing Industrial Pasts in the Digital Age
Following the success of the temporary history lab in September and October 2020, the REMIX team sorted and evaluated the sources collected, which include digitised versions of private photo albums. Drawing on the personal contacts that were established during the lab, some 25 oral history interviews were conducted, recorded and filmed.
Innovating for the future of scholarly publications in history
One of the key missions of the C²DH is to examine the consequences of the digital turn for historical research in a critical, experimental and interdisciplinary way and to use its findings to devise new practices and research tools.
In partnership with the scientific editor De Gruyter Oldenbourg
In 2021, the C²DH launched three book series in open access with the scientific editor De Gruyter Oldenbourg.
