Philippe was working on the digital exhibition about 100 years of East Belgium as a Research associate

Philippe Beck was (2019-2020) a Research Associate/Post-Doctoral Researcher at the C²DH, where he is (together with Andreas Fickers, Christoph Brüll and Vitus Sproten) in charge of designing a virtual exhibition on the history of East Belgium. He used to teach German language skills and East Belgian history at the UCLouvain. His PhD thesis (2010, UCLouvain) about the East Belgian writers Peter Schmitz and Josef Ponten and the inter-war period was awarded the Prize of the Parliament of the German Speaking Community of Belgium in 2011 and published as a 700-page book under the title Umstrittenes Grenzland (2013). In 2014 he made Peter Schmitz’ forgotten anti-war novel Golgatha (1937), burned in 1940 by the Nazis, available again. Moreover, he is the (co-)author of several chapters of the book series Grenzerfahrungen. Eine Geschichte der Deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft Belgiens (2014 ff.). His main fields of interest are the literary production related to World War I in German and French, as well as the history of Eupen-Malmedy, with a focus on its literary production and the memory of the two World Wars.
