On Thursday 30 May 2024, Mrs Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth and the members of her Cabinet visited the University of Luxembourg, Belval campus. After being greeted by Mr Christian Weis, Mayor of the City of Esch-sur-Alzette, the guests had insightful discussions on the strategic vision for research and innovation at the University of Luxembourg in the European and international context with Prof.

The "Personenstandsaufnahme" of 10 October 1941, a census conducted by the German occupier in Luxembourg with additional questions on nationality, mother tongue and ethnicity, is one of the best-known historical events in Luxembourg's contemporary history. Together with the strike against forced recruitment in August/September 1942, it remains an integral part of the culture of remembrance and historiography to this day.

In 1948, on assignment for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), David Seymour completed a three-month mission that took him to his home country of Poland as well as to Greece, Italy, Austria, and Hungary, where he visited cities and villages ravaged by war.

Historical research and the production of historical narratives relies on archives. With thedigital turn, both the notion and the function of archive have changed. The practices ofselection, curation, and interpretation of archival sources have been deeply affected by newscientific virtues such as accessibility, sharing, and participation. Web 2.0 technologies and the Internet gave rise to a new type of archive resulting from real time “capture culture” and “event crawls”.

Over the centuries, many emperors, princes and conquerors, but also philosophers, writers and legal experts developed theories on the rapprochement of the peoples of Europe.

This chapter is not intended to offer an exhaustive state of the art, but rather to reflect on the evolving trends in the history of data networks. It highlights prominent topics within this history. It starts with the narratives surrounding ARPANET and explores government support, competition among companies, governance, and regulation. It looks at how the history of the Internet is linked with the history of pre-networking technologies and alternative developments in networking technologies in countries outside the United States.
