Hybrid Histories: Technologies of Memory and the Cultural Dynamics of Home Movies, 1895-2005 (presentation)

In this presentation, I will present my PhD dissertation on the cultural dynamics of home movies in the twentieth century. In my research, I have investigated how various generations have recorded their memories on film, video and digital media, and, more specifically, how changes in these “technologies of memory” have shaped new forms of home movie making and screening.

In the town of Esch-sur-Alzette in southern Luxembourg, people prepare for Pentecost in May 1940; the town dresses up, the children look forward to the traditional fair. But this will not take place. For on 10 May 1940, the war comes to the Grand Duchy. Germany invades neutral Luxembourg. Even today, 10 May is considered a "day of fate" - because the lives of the entire population changed in one fell swoop.

Russians in Luxembourg, WWII:
