IWalk: Mapping Jewish Life with your Mobile – New ways of teaching Jewish history in Luxembourg

Developed by USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education, the IWalk is an interactive educational program that connects concrete physical locations with memories of historical events that took place at those locations. It is currently concentrating on Europe and the US. People walking through the different tours use tablet computers to watch clips of Holocaust survivors and witnesses telling personal stories about the role of the locations in their experiences. The clips are drawn from their testimonies in the USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive.

Podcast "Communicating Europe"

Podcast "Communicating Europe"

In this podcast episode, Andreas Fickers, co-author of the book ‘Communicating Europe’, reflects on the transformation of the radio as a communication space in Europe. This episode introduces the story of Hans, who in the 1930s listened to the entire European continent by using nothing but his radio. It illustrates the new possibilities and excitement that came with the radio being introduced as a new communication technology in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century.

The Internet and the EU Market from a historical perspective

The Internet and the EU Market from a historical perspective

This special issue is the result of an open call launched two years ago in connection with the activities of the Robert Schuman Initiative, led at the University of Luxembourg by Prof. David Howarth. Our call for papers invited scholars to historically analyse the relationship between the EU single market and the internet from a critical perspective. This interdisciplinary issue mainly analyses how the development of the Internet has created major regulatory challenges at the EU level.

The Promise and Peril of Digital Research in Yiddish: An Interview with Gerben Zaagsma

The Promise and Peril of Digital Research in Yiddish: An Interview with Gerben Zaagsma

It seemed fitting to break away from a conference bringing together American and European scholars and researchers working on digital humanities for an old-fashioned face-to-face conversation about Yiddish. During a conference on Digital Hermeneutics at the German Heritage Institute in Washington, DC, I sat down to talk with Gerben Zaagsma, who is an assistant professor at the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History at the University of Luxembourg.

Radio-Feature "100 Jahre Ostbelgien": Folge 2 "Das lange 19. Jahrhundert"

Radio-Feature "100 Jahre Ostbelgien": Folge 2 "Das lange 19. Jahrhundert"

The Digital Archive and the Politics of Digitisation

The Digital Archive and the Politics of Digitisation

This paper deals with a question that is becoming increasingly important for historians who work with digitised cultural heritage: what are the politics of digitisation and what are its implications for historical research? Is the often-lauded democratising potential of digitisation also offset by risks, inherent in selection processes that might privilege the digitisation of heritage corresponding to existing national master narratives, the availability of funding and/or the priorities set by cultural policies and certain research agendas?

La promesse de Dupong...

La promesse de Dupong...

Despite the promise that foreign Jews who had resided in Luxembourg before the war and had to flee nazi persecution, could come back after the war, Luxembourg authorities restricted the return of the foreign Jews who had survived and made an application to return and settle in the Grand-Duchy. The article is based on the analysis of a database of more than 3.000 foreign Jews who had resided in Luxembourg in the 1930s. More than 400 foreign Jews tried to return after the war.

Roundtable Combating anti-Semitism in contemporary Europe What is the state of anti-Semitism in Europe, and Luxembourg, today? How can it be situated within the broader context of rising hate speech and crime, online and offline? What methods are being proposed to combat it? How does it relate to politics and the broader memory battles that are being fought in Europe today? These will be the themes addressed during a round table discussion with the following participants:
