This article aims at offering a historiographical sketch of the emergence and development of media history as a sub-discipline of historical research. By retracing important disciplinary traditions and by reflecting on the impact that various "turns" in humanities had on media historical scholarship, the author identifies central concepts, methodological approaches, and thematic focal points that characterize the field. Finally, new challenges of doing media history in the digital age - such as transmedia storytelling and media convergence are discussed.

Von ihrer Gründung in den letzten Kriegsmonaten 1918 bis zu Ihrem Ende in den 1970er Jahren war Le Flambeau die dominierende politische und literarische Zeitschrift des belgischen frankophonen Liberalismus. Ihre Verankerung in einem Brüsseler Mikrokosmos um die Freie Universität Brüssel, die jüdische Gemeinschaft und die lokale Sektion der Liberalen Partei und eine unerschütterliche Frankophilie waren die wichtigsten Charakteristiken des Blattes.

Au-delà de la diversité des thématiques, espaces et temporalités appréhendés et des méthodologies choisies, les auteurs de ces six Varia partagent, outre leur intérêt pour les territoires, les acteurs et le souhait d’analyser finement les outils, débats et enjeux à l’œuvre, un intérêt pour les trajectoires, qu’elles soient décisionnelles et s’appréhendent en termes de gouvernance, ou matérielles et se lisent en termes d’infrastructures.

In media historiography, there have generally been two approaches to historicize past media technologies and their practices. Whereas media historians generally focus on historical changes by maintaining a diachronic perspective on how media technologies and practices develop over time, media archaeologists commonly adopt a synchronic perspective in (re)constructing parallel or alternative histories.

Drawing on archives gathered in the six founding member states of the European Union, this book offers a new perspective on the "constitutionalization" of the European treaties, which was launched in the 1960s by the Court of Justice of the EU. By highlighting the professional and personal backgrounds of the first European judges and advocates general, its author studies the dynamics which prevailed within the institution during its "revolutionary" years and analyzes the Court’s relationship with the Member States of the European Communities.

The connection between settlement sites and water bodies has been the most prominent characteristic of the Stone Age settlement patterns in North-Eastern Europe. Geologist and archaeologist Constantin Grewingk stated already in 1865 that in the Eastern Baltic region “Stone Age people lived by the sea and rivers”. Although there was no empirical data at that time, the following discoveries confirmed this claim.

On July 10-14, 2018, the Association for Borderlands Studies (ABS) held its Second World Conference in Vienna and Budapest. The meeting was attended by around 450 participants from 54 countries, including renowned experts and practitioners, spanning all fields of the humanities and the social sciences. The ABS is the world’s largest academic organization dedicated to the systematic study and exchange of ideas, information and analysis of international border, and the processes and communities engendered by such borders.
