Ten cultural-historical case studies investigate how deaths in war were dealt with based on soldier graves of the Second World War. In this dissertation, the resting places of the fallen German soldiers offer a unique perspective in the evaluation of death during a violent conflict and in the post-war period. The examination frame extends from 1939 to the present and follows the reception and importance of the graves and the fallen in military, politics and society. Some single chapters of this thesis have been already published or are intended for publication.

Depuis le début du xxe siècle, notamment à l’occasion des coupes Gordon-Bennett (1900), c’est sous les projecteurs d’une presse cocardière, complice et friande de modernité technique que les constructeurs automobiles présentent, sur la scène européenne, les performances de leurs bolides. Au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, alors que le parc automobile et les flux touristiques croissent de façon vertigineuse, les courses automobiles se multiplient.

Digital technologies may impact the practices of historians at every stages of their research, from retrieving archives, building a corpus to writing and editing. Digital tools have influenced spaces for scientific dialogue and free flow of ideas within the historians' community. As such, Digital Humanities are challenging the shaping of history, but they could also become an object of history. Therefore, we will analyse such an hybridization that may enrich our field of study.

Bien que le Web ait seulement trente ans, son patrimoine est déjà pléthorique : la fondation Internet Archive a collecté plus de 345 milliards de pages web depuis 1996. Cette fondation, qui fut l’un des pionniers de l’archivage du Web, n’est pas seule à préserver et collecter aujourd’hui ce patrimoine dit « nativement numérique ». Au cours des années 2000, plusieurs pays ont en effet lancé de tels archivages, souvent confiés aux bibliothèques nationales, et cette tendance ne cesse de s’affirmer depuis.

Filant la métaphore culinaire, cet article interroge le « changement de régime » qu’entraîne le recours aux archives du Web.

In this interview, Professor Andrew Prescott describes his beginnings as a librarian and how this profession brought him to the field of digital humanities. He emphasizes more broadly the role of curators in this field including the role of metadata and the configuration of collections in a new way. Andrew Prescott also historicizes the digital turn in humanities and explores the most exciting trends for the future.

In the late 2000s, young French black people, practicing different African popular dance genres, use the term boucan (loud noise) to describe forms of bodily expressivity that are mostly inaudible. Boucan, to them, is predominantly visual and is produced through ingenuity, boldness and flamboyance in competitive performances relying on dance, appearance and conspicuous consumption, taking place in public spaces. This article looks at the ways in which both sonic and visual ‘noises’ are used to negotiate presence and circulation in urban spaces that are only virtually open to all.
