This interdisciplinary two-year Master’s degree offers a unique opportunity to decode and shape the ways in which history production is becoming more digital and public. Through collaborative hands-on projects and critical training, students develop the skills needed to research, communicate and present history in engaging and accessible formats.
The curriculum, developed by historians, digital humanists and museum professionals, covers a wide range of topics including digital source criticism, public history theory and methods, data visualisation, archival digitisation, digital storytelling, immersive media and more. Students engage with formats such as oral history, audiovisual production and video games, while working on projects in partnership with cultural institutions, archives and media organisations.
Drawing on the C²DH’s internationally recognised expertise in digital historiography and public history practices, the programme combines academic rigour with practical applications. Partnerships with institutions like Ca’ Foscari University in Venice offer further opportunities for exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Graduates are well prepared for careers in cultural institutions, tourism, media production and public administration, or for further academic research through PhD programmes. With a maximum of 15 students per cohort, the programme offers personalised guidance in course selection and traineeships, reflecting the University of Luxembourg’s commitment to high-quality, student-centred training.
The first cohort, welcomed in September 2024, is composed of a diverse group of students from across Europe and beyond, reflecting the international appeal and relevance of the programme. With this new Master’s programme, the C²DH reinforces its role as a laboratory for innovating and sharing contemporary history, and as a leading hub for cutting-edge teaching at the intersection of public engagement, history and digital technology.
The programme, led by Prof. Thomas Cauvin and Prof. Sandra Camarda, was initiated by the C²DH and is offered in partnership with the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.
