An international platform for reflection on the methodological and epistemological challenges facing historiography in the digital age

An international player in digital history research

While one of the main aims of the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) is to carry out academic research and teaching on the contemporary history of Luxembourg and Europe from a transnational perspective, it also intends to become an international platform for reflection on the methodological and epistemological challenges facing historiography in the digital age.

The C²DH places particular emphasis on the development of digital methods and tools as drivers of innovative research in contemporary history, and it is also engaged in critical reflection on how these new instruments can and should be used. “The C²DH wants to become a centre of excellence at international level,” explains its Director, Andreas Fickers. “It wants to position itself in the scientific community as a place for reflection on the many challenges raised by digital technologies for the practice of history.”

With 13 PhD students, the Doctoral Training Unit (DTU) on Digital History and Hermeneutics makes a significant contribution to the international recognition of the centre as a unique platform for critical reflection on digital history and hermeneutics. Cooperation with the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media in Fairfax, Virginia, the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis at Stanford University, the Humlab at Umeå University in Sweden, the DHLAB at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne and the Trier Center for Digital Humanities creates close links with institutions that have extensive experience in history and humanities. These partnerships are vital for the collaborative development of new digital historiography tools and the design of innovative research projects.

To ensure effective communication, the C²DH website and social media play a vital role, reaching out to the international research community and to society at large and consolidating the centre’s role as a player in public history.
