Elisabeth was a PhD candidate working on the "History of justice in Luxembourg" project

Elisabeth Wingerter was a PhD Candidate working on the history of justice in Luxembourg in the framework of the HISTJUST research project launched by the Ministry of Justice and the C²DH in cooperation with the National Archives. The project aims at exploring the history of Luxemburg’s justice system from 1815 until the present day.

Elisabeth holds a Master’s degree in World History from New York University, where she has been researching abortion laws in the German Democratic Republic and the Soviet Union between 1949 and 1972. Previously, she completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Luxembourg, focusing on National Socialist understandings of justice. She prepared a case study about the criminalization of abortion in the Third Reich based on case files from a women’s prison in Saarbrücken, Germany.

Apart from contributing to the development of the virtual exhibit for the HISTJUST project, she was also preparing a dissertation that will focus on the postwar purge in Luxembourg, known as the épuration, with a particular focus on justice personnel and police.

Elisabeth obtained her PhD diploma in December 2021.
