'Rationale Trennung' or 'Marriage d'Amour'? History and Philosophy of Educational Research

This article focuses on disciplinary interrelationships between philosophy and history within the framework of educational sciences. It deals with the epistemological, material, political, and categorical conditions of permeability, some of which initiate a separation of historical science from philosophy, whereas others allow, on the one hand, for history to profit from philosophy and, on the other, for philosophy to profit from history. The article illustrates how both history and philosophy

Materializing Memories. Dispositifs, Generations, Amateurs

Materializing Memories. Dispositifs, Generations, Amateurs

A multitude of devices and technological tools now exist to make, share, and store memories and moments with family, friends, and even strangers. Memory practices such as home movies, which originated as the privilege of a few, well-to-do families, have now emerged as ubiquitous and immediate cultures of sharing. Departing from the history of home movies, this volume offers a sophisticated understanding of technologically mediated, mostly ritualized memory practices, from early beginnings in the fin-de-siècle to today.

"Hybrid Histories". Versuch einer kritischen Standortbestimmung der Mediengeschichte

"Hybrid Histories". Versuch einer kritischen Standortbestimmung der Mediengeschichte

This article aims at offering a historiographical sketch of the emergence and development of media history as a sub-discipline of historical research. By retracing important disciplinary traditions and by reflecting on the impact that various "turns" in humanities had on media historical scholarship, the author identifies central concepts, methodological approaches, and thematic focal points that characterize the field. Finally, new challenges of doing media history in the digital age - such as transmedia storytelling and media convergence are discussed.

Quantifying the shoreline connection of the Stone Age settlements in Southern Karelia (Finland)

Quantifying the shoreline connection of the Stone Age settlements in Southern Karelia (Finland)

The connection between settlement sites and water bodies has been the most prominent characteristic of the Stone Age settlement patterns in North-Eastern Europe. Geologist and archaeologist Constantin Grewingk stated already in 1865 that in the Eastern Baltic region “Stone Age people lived by the sea and rivers”. Although there was no empirical data at that time, the following discoveries confirmed this claim.

“On the road again”: An Experimental Media Archaeology journey to the origins of transnational television in Europe

This video documents the authors’ journey back to the origins of transnational television in Europe. Inspired by the idea of experimental media archaeology (EMA), the trip to original locations of the transnational media event known as ‘Paris-week’ in 1952 illustrates a new approach to media historiography, which aims to sensitize television historians for the material remains, topography and physical spaces of early television transmissions. Readers /viewers are invited to watch the different episodes of the authors’ journey by clicking on the figures.
