Audiovisual Data in Digital Humanities

Audiovisual Data in Digital Humanities

This issue of VIEW provides a critical survey of new digital humanities (DH) methods and tools directed toward audiovisual (AV) media. DH as a field is still dominated by a focus on textual studies (studies of word culture) that are largely “deaf and blind” in their capacity to search, discover, and study AV materials. The mandate to improve these capacities is clear and unquestioned, though the pathways are fecund and numerous.

This contribution aims to shed light on how serving on the boards of local sporting associations enables some leaders to access the elite of international sport. The case of three international leaders (Louis Daugé, Teddy Kriegk, and Melchior de Polignac) is observed through a sociography of the presidents of sports clubs in the city of Reims, the regional sports capital of Champagne-Ardenne, where they were prominent figures and local elites.

Polentone vs terrone: a historical corpus-based analysis of media representation of Italian internal migration

Polentone vs terrone: a historical corpus-based analysis of media representation of Italian internal migration

The socio-discursive landscape surrounding the migration debate is characterised by a growing sense of crisis in both personal and collective identities. From this viewpoint, discourses about immigration are also always attempts at reconstructing the threatened ‘home identity’ of the respective host society. It is such attempts at reasserting identity-in-crisis (due to migration) that are the focus of the volume Migration and Media: Discourses about identities in crisis.

Vom Dazwischen-Sein. Eupen-Malmedy in den deutsch-belgischen Beziehungen 1918-1949

Vom Dazwischen-Sein.

The media construction of Italian identity: A transatlantic, digital humanities analysis of italianità, ethnicity, and whiteness, 1880-1920

The media construction of Italian identity: A transatlantic, digital humanities analysis of italianità, ethnicity, and whiteness, 1880-1920

This article explores a novel way to understand the process of diasporic identity formation by comparing the discursive structure of Italian diasporic newspapers published in the United States with the baseline of public discourse in Italy. It uses as its evidence Italian language newspapers published in the United States from 1898 to 1920 (ChroniclItaly) and the Italian newspaper La Stampa published in Italy between 1867 and 1900.

Transmission of Collective Memory nad Jewish Identity in Postwar Jewish Generations through War Souvenirs

Transmission of Collective Memory nad Jewish Identity in Postwar Jewish Generations through War Souvenirs

My contribution includes a sample of testimonies containing the life stories of Jews born in the aftermath of World War II in two countries (Czechoslovakia and Luxembourg). At that time, Czechoslovakian Jews were living through the era of de-Stalinisation, and their narratives offer new insights into this segment of Jewish postwar history that differ from those of Jews living in liberal democratic European states.

Židovský skauting během 2. světové války a v poválečném období v Československu a Francii

Jewish scouting is a phenomenon that has not been properly investigated, even though Czechoslovak and French Jewish scouts used to work on hundred places in Czechoslovakia and France. Despite this fact, we know very little about their membership, structure and roles. Besides the usual scout program, Jewish organizations in Czechoslovakia had something unique — Zionist education as a prerequisite for resettling their members in Palestine.

Johnny and Ivan learning in a programmed way: The reinvention of one American technology

Johnny and Ivan learning in a programmed way: The reinvention of one American technology

In the heated times of the Cold War, two hypothetical schoolboys – Johnny in the United States and Ivan in the Soviet Union (USSR) – were both promised a school where they would learn in a new way. This new way – the technology of programmed instruction – was developed by the American behavioral psychologist Burrhus F. Skinner. It became popular globally over the 1960s and was promoted passionately in the United States and the USSR alike.

(De)Habituation Histories: How to Re-Sensitize Media Historians

(De)Habituation Histories: How to Re-Sensitize Media Historians

In line with our earlier work, we will take the material object – the technological device – and, more specifically, the sensorial and experiential dimensions expressed in media use as a point of departure for our reflections. Why would the sensorial and experiential dimensions of media use be a relevant point of departure for such reflections? And, by extension: why would such reflections help to theoretically frame media newness?

From linguistic innovation to language change: a corpus-based investigation of the response marker non c'è problema

From linguistic innovation to language change: a corpus-based investigation of the response marker non c'è problema

This study investigates the diachrony of the Italian expression non c’è problema ‘no problem’ when used as a response marker (e.g., Tottie 1991; Ward 2006) to establish if it represents a case of language change (Milroy, 1992: 171). If on the one hand, the expression was indeed reported to be a neologism by Radtke in 1990, a careful exploration of the relevant literature on the other has revealed that a diachronic, quantitative and pragmatic investigation of its distribution has not been conducted yet.
